05) Alfred Hitchcock
The Masterpiece Collection
The Master of Suspense has had a good couple of years, with some truly excellent releases hitting the shelves that have filled in some significant gaps in his filmography. This year Hitchcock fans got the best of the bunch with the Alfred Hitchcock Masterpiece Collection, a 14-disc, 15-film set featuring many of his most essential works. It's tough to go wrong with a set that contains Psycho, Vertigo, Rear Window, The Birds and The Man Who Knew Too Much, to name just a few. There is a documentary and other extras for every film in this set – and considering the set can be had for under $100, you have no reason at all to not own this.

04) The Wizard Of Oz
Three-Disc Collector's Edition
Sure, The Wizard of Oz has had a number of DVD releases already ... but none of those releases have been as comprehensive as this. Three discs. A stunning restoration of the film. The 1925 cinema version of the story. A number of short Oz films from the same era. And enough documentaries and other extras to crush the Wicked Witch of the East. Radio broadcasts. Commentaries. Trailers. Home movies. Outtakes and deleted scenes. Television specials. Publicity photos. And plenty more. No wonder this release had just about every Oz fan this side of the Yellow Brick Road thinking about double-dipping.

03) Ben Hur
Four-Disc Collector's Edition
Classics don't get much bigger and filled with bombast than the legendary Ben-Hur, a huge film with a huge star and a huge reputation. A reputation, we might add, this film rightfully earned with some truly majestic action sequences. Now the film is matched with a truly majestic four-disc set containing a lovingly restored print and a chariot full of extras. The restored print alone makes this worth a purchase. Throw in the excellent audio commentaries, the inclusion of the 1925 silent version, and some two and a half hours of documentary material and you'd be nuts to not want this in your collection. Only the number one film in our countdown made more lists in our polling, making this a solid winner in the DVD In My Pants community. 02) The Fly
Collector's Edition
Cult classics don't get much more classic than David Cronenberg's 1986 film, The Fly. With a creepy Jeff Goldblum and a creepy fly and a creepy Jeff Goldblum as a fly, this film has won over fans for 20 years. If you've never experienced Cronenberg's chilling tale, no time has ever been better to find out just what it is that has drawn people to this film over the years, because the two-disc collector's edition set released late last year is quite comprehensive for a film that falls short of blockbuster status. There is a superb director commentary on the first disc, while the second disc boasts a feature length – and by feature length we mean almost three-hour - documentary covering everything you could possibly want to know about this film. And that's only the centerpiece extra, because there is plenty more on this disc. To get the full scoop on this must-have DVD release, check out our review.

01) King Kong
Collector's Edition
It appeared on more lists than any other DVD release. It garnered raves from everyone who managed to get their grubby paws on it. It was as big as the giant ape it featured. It is, of course, the Collector's Edition release of King Kong, just in time to remind the world that someone got to the giant ape story before Peter Jackson – and even 70 years ago did it better. If you got the two-disc version, you were overwhelmed with extras. We're talking dense commentaries, a seven-part documentary, and a slew of other items great and small to eat up your time like Kong would a Skull Island native. Grab the four-disc boxed version and you get not only the classic film and all the extra goodies, but Son of Kong and Mighty Joe Young, too. How could any sane fan resist? Long after Peter Jackson's remake has faded from memory, the original will still be a classic – and this will be the DVD edition of that classic you want. Maybe that's why King Kong: Collector's Edition is the 2005's DVD of the Year.
