That isn't why at all. It has everything to do with the emergence of the atomic bomb and the birth of the Cold War. With the advent of nuclear war, the destruction of entire cities and even the whole planet struck unnervingly close to home. _________________ "Oh, now that's just larphillipesque." - Ried

I love the '53 WOTW because it strikes a nice balance between Cold War paranoia and earnest 50's Americana. Th eopening credits and the sequence of the planets is wodnerful, even if it's complteley inaccurate. It's still cool, especially the surface of Jupiter, which actually looks more like Io. The image of the war machine crashing into the church in the end is still very haunting. The music is quite good too. _________________ Cru knows. - Shoe

Okay. Well, there's that too.
Let's add to the above:
"With the birthing of the Cold War Era upon them and the knowledge of the unusual ease in which an atomic bomb can level cities flat, this gentle poke reminded movie goers all too well of the world that may lay ahead."
Anyway, pics. Where are the pics, dude? Did my photobucket link not work? _________________

so, the "aliens are an allegory for communism" wasn't obvious to you? This is a fine scifi film, but it's also a masterpiece of propaganda. This was the era of HUAC, and the clash of Americana with an indestructible faceless army was a very powerful film for young and old alike. _________________ Science flies you to the moon. Nice choices on the screencaps.
The War of the Worlds (1953) is one of my favorite science fiction films. It totally captures a real sense of "the end of the world is here!", especially those final scenes in the city. The church scenes are so surreal and scary, and the scenes of destruction and carnage were really dramatic for their time. Heck, even now they remain very dramatic.
Haven't seen the new one, but from what I understand, it dropped the ball on a lot of what made the original (ignoring the novel altogether for a moment) so great.
Someone just gave me the new one, though, so I'll judge for myself soon enough. _________________ Blog - Alfred Hitchcock - Music - Podcast - Comics - Twitter |

I guess I just never really bought that as the intended message of the film at the time is was made. Sure, in hindsight we can point it out in relation to the cultural zeitgeist, but I don't really think George Pal intended it as such. Whatever people say.
Either that or I'm talkin' outta my ass, here. Take your pick. _________________

I vote "ass," although I still like your review. None of these were after-the-fact assessments, but fairly common knowledge. There is even some scuttlebutt that the CIA and FBI had something to do with the trend in order to both: A) Convince the populace that the Soviet threat was real and that unless the US had a strong defense, we could be annialated at any time, and B) root the commies from Hollywood. _________________ "Oh, now that's just larphillipesque." - Ried

I'll agree on the Communism angle, but what does that say about our friend Irwin Allen who had a knack for the killer BEM. "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" had a Communist every week (post edited a la 84 - to clear up a brain fart)
But c'mon the CIA and FBI? That's like saying Speilberg was paid by the Bush Administration to include 9/11 imagery in HIS movie. The "Stinking Reds" motif of Pal's film was most likely his own political opinion. Oddly it should be noted that when Ann Robinson was interviewed by a British website, she didn't know of any intentional references to Communism. _________________ Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend.

I know first-hand some details regarding Spielberg's encounters with our defense and intelligence agencies regarding Close Encounters and ET. _________________ "Oh, now that's just larphillipesque." - Ried
