He recommends it over the Sci-Fi mini-series?
Definately worth a look, then, because it was pretty good IMO.
(Yes, I've read the book.) |

The Sci Fi miniseries in my opinion, sucked.
Poor casting, added stuff that wasn't in the book, and it took away from the story rather than adding. Poor sets etc.
I really, really, really disliked the miniseries.
Now, this movie is not a great adaptation of the book. It also adds stuff that isn't in the book. But it's so weird, so wild and so much like the novel in some ways. I love it.
Cool Review Chris. Sounds like it isn't the release those fans of us were hoping for but is better than what we had before. |

Videowerken, your review (well done, by the way) reminded me that I need to get around to getting Dune on DVD. I only have an old, beat-up, video store VHS copy of the film ... which does me little good, since I don't own a VCR. _________________ Blog - Alfred Hitchcock - Music - Podcast - Comics - Twitter |

I didn't hate the miniseries, but I can agree with everything you hated about it.
Have you seen the Children of Dune miniseries? It corrects much of what I didn't like about the costuming/design of the first series. It does a decent job of condensing two books (Dune Messiah/Children of Dune) into one series, though it starts to flounder towards the end of the Children of Dune material. The start of Leto II's transformation into the god Emperor was not handled well at all.
Still, it may be worth checking out.
After wtaching the extended version of Lynch's Dune, I was struck by how much stronger and surprisngly more focused the theatrical cut is. Watching them back to back really proves that, with the constraints he had, Lynch really did make the best film possible. _________________ Cru knows. - Shoe

I did see Children. It was better for sure than the original mini-series.
I still thought there was some major problems and some additions to the story I didn't like (can't remember specifically but I *think* it had something to do with Sarandon's Wensicia and her involvement).
I also really really thought Alec Newman and Alice Krige were horrible in both series. The unfortunate part about that is they play such key parts (Paul and Lady Jessica). |

Over the last several years, I did a lot of reading about the history of Dune, and its many attempts at becoming a movie. In 1973, Alejandro Jodorowsky acquired the rights to make the film, and spent 2 years and $2-3 million in pre-production. His script was very different from the book, and would have made a terrible Dune (although it certainly would have been "interesting").
However, the people Alejandro brought together to design the look of the film would utlimately change the look of all major science fiction films. H.R. Giger, Dan O Bannon, Jean "Moebius" Giraud, and Chris Foss all met each other while working on this film - and after the production fizzled (Alejandro couldn't find anyone to finance or distribute the film), they stuck together for a few years, working on Alien, Blader Runner, and ultimately another version of Dune.
De Laurentis acquired the right to Dune in the late 70s and hired Ridley Scott to direct. It's unclear as to what exactly transpired, but Scott left the production, along with all of the production staff.
When Lynch was hired, he scrapped all of the concept artwork (he deemed Giger's work too recognizable), and started from scratch. Most of the concepts in the finalized film are Lynch's own, including the odd artwork hanging on walls throughout the movie.
Frank Herbert, the author of Dune, enjoyed the changes Lynch made, and loved the production design (Herbert's books, although epic, offer very little description of the environments - so the production designers had very little to go on).
The initial cut of the 1984 film was over 4 hours, and Lynch had to reshoot a few scenes to truncate big chunks of the story (this is explained very briefly in one of the extras of the DVD). The lack of time and money resulted in a rushed post-production. Lynch was never happy with the theatrical cut, and thought of it more as a compromise. Lynch had started writing screenplays to 2 Dune sequels, but these were shelved after the first movie tanked at the box office.
De Laurentis still owns the rights today. These rights don't cover television productions, which allowed for the mini series to be realized. _________________ Science flies you to the moon. Religion flies you into buildings. - Victor Stenger

Just watched Dune theatrical version today and loved it. Very nice review Video. I was confused at parts, mainly within the 1st 45 minutes but I can't wait to rewatch it again, which is very unusal because I tend to hate these types of movies. _________________ "I hate America...blahblahblah...trash.." -Minou |

PS - The rating on this review is off. It should be 5 overall (since he gave it 5 in each category).

No, he didn't. I submitted that review before the individual rating system was established...I would have given it very different numbers than what is actually listed. _________________ Science flies you to the moon. Religion flies you into buildings. - Victor Stenger

Why would it lie?

Quick trivia...
The girl who played Alia Atreides (Alicia Witt), was born the same place I was (Worcester Massachusetts), and is about the same age as Mr. Knight.

You suck.
Alicia Witt is crazy hot. Seeing a picture of her as a little girl totally ruins that. |

You sure? I'm pretty sure Lex is anti-redhead, 'cept Lohan.
I've extended the "no hot redheads except..." to include Kate Mara and Isla Fisher.
Though I think the latter is pregnant now, so she can never be hot again. |

Finally rewatched Dune a month ago with a few friends. I think I enjoyed it less because they didnt really dig it. Plus its still a very confusing movie even after viewing it twice. _________________ "I hate America...blahblahblah...trash.." -Minou |

from my review:
Quote:
...you’ll need to watch the film at least four or five times (or read the book) to understand most of the events that unfold.
and
Quote:
People who have never read the book won’t understand what is going on, because a lot of exposition is left on the cutting room floor.
