This is one of the ALL-TIME best movies ever made.
My family gets together and watch it every year. If for some chance we cant watch it together, we talk to each other on the phone during it.
"is this the airport clark"
"Clark, That there is a RV" Dont get your heart set on it, were taking it with us when we leave here next month". |

Red, I loved this review (as I love this film) but I'm sad to report that tomorrow's Vegas Vacation review disagrees with many things that you said here. _________________ "Oh, now that's just larphillipesque." - Ried

Good review! I have to put Christmas Vacation under the original Vacation movie though. Still, it's probably my favorite "family" Christmas movie.
I love that you point out that Clark never loses his desire to put others first which is what makes him such a great character. Which I think points out just what a great actor Chevy Chase really is because that is so unlike his true nature. _________________ "Agreed" - Pender |

Chevy has always been an asshole. If you read the quite excellent oral history of Saturday Night Live, not one former castmate (both those who worked with him as well as those on the show when he guested) had a single kind word to say about him. The Chevy Chase Roast on Comedy Central was infamous due to the fact that none of the comics roasting him really knew him. Normally, this is an honor reserved for close friends.
With the exception of Clark W. Griswold, most of Chevy's characters were assholes as well. Either through his talent, his youth, his scripts, or his directors (usually a combination of them all) managed to make his asshole tendencies charming and funny on screen. After he started allowing his ego to overshadow his talent, his schtick wore thin. Audiences quickly abandonded him and he started choosing projects based on an over-inflated sense of self (The Chevy Chase Show) and pure desparation for a paycheck and some screentime... regardless of the merits of the project (Caddyshack II.)
I touch on this all briefly in my upcoming Vegas Vacation review (Friday) but I had to scale it back because that movie didn't deserve so many words.

My father took me to see this when it came out in theaters... SIX TIMES.
I still can't bring myself to watch it. |

Tradition for us to watch each year.
Good review and points taken to look for the "SE" version before December.

I've always heard that and while I haven't read that book (I'll put it on the list now though) I have read other things about SNL where people talk poorly of him. I guess my original question though would have been which film marks the beginning of the slide?
Also, have you ever read the post Kevin Smith did a long time ago about what happened when he met Chevy Chase to talk about the Fletch film? It's pretty much right along the lines of everything you've heard before. Smith wanted to do Fletch Won which is really Fletch's first adventure (great book if you can find it). He wanted Jason Lee to play Fletch but liked the idea of Chevy Chase playing an older Fletch telling the story as a flashback. Needless to say Chase's ego was bruised.
