This thread is for discussing the DIMP review of Flags of Our Fathers by Shawn McLoughlin (aka Noto).

Fantastic review from top to bottom. DAMN, you had me all set to go buy this NOW until I got to the end. Eh. That's way bare bones ... and since you know there will be some deluxe set with both films included, better to wait. _________________ Blog - Alfred Hitchcock - Music - Podcast - Comics - Twitter |

Agreed. Really nice review, Noto. I know you rushed this one but the result is very good.

This movie is something else; Saw it twice in theaters-- the first time I had conflicted feelings as I watched it. After a brilliant opening 45 minutes, I thought the jumps in time became distracting, and I couldn't quite tell who they were referring to in some scenes. Half the dialogue seemed to be like, "Was that Hank in the picture? Or was it Hanlon?" I'm sitting in my seat after 90 minutes, STILL asking, "WAIT, which one was Hank??????" Took me out of the movie somewhat, and having read tons of reviews on the film, I see it was a fairly common complaint.
But something about the movie stuck with me, and I gave it a second chance on the big screen a couple months later. Anticipating the flashback structure and having a better sense of who was who, AND having seen Letters From Iwo Jima, I saw it for the awesome, elegiac near-masterpiece that it is. |

Honestly, there was something about this film's trailer that did nothing for me and I never saw it in theaters. Having read the review, I'm interested but I think I'll wait for the deluxe set.
Great review though and like Shoe said, you were selling me all the way until the end.
Noto - Have you seen Letters From Iwo Jima? I have a friend whose opinions I trust pretty well tell me he was underwhelmed by both films. You and I have similar tastes on a lot of things so I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on that one. _________________ "Agreed" - Pender |

Not yet. It's the only best picture nominee I haven't seen. Before seeing Flags, I would say I was much more psyched to see Letters. Having now seen Flags, I'm even more psyched.
My ex really wants to see it, so I've been waiting for our schedules to line up.
Oh, and thanks, Surf! _________________ These movies just seem too 'Noto' for me.

I will be enjoying desaturated Phillippe awesomeness for the third time in my life before evening's end!!!!!
Can't wait to revisit that awesome strawberry dessert mockup, or that SUPER-CGI'd shot of the three guys waving to Soldier Field. |

I nearly bought this today.
Off early and was gonna go get it.
Now, I will have to rent it instead - thanks for the heads-up, Noto.
I cannot double dip and I want some extras - goddammit.

Great review. It made me move this movie from wanting to see, to need to see. _________________ "It isn't that unusual, actually. Once the brain starts bleeding... bad news." Surf Monkey |
