I've had part one in my queue for about a year now and haven't moved it up to watch it. I should do so now that I bought The Departed.

Awesome review!

Cool Cool Cool

Nice review Noto. I've seen Infernal Affairs but none of the sequals. I might have to check them out now.

I saw Infernal Affairs a couple days after Departed. It was a joke.

Everything. Big smile (<- See? It's so much of a joke compared to Departed, that I don't even give a shit explaining.)

...Now I feel like an ass.

And yet, The Departed would never have been if not for Infernal Affairs.

I find it interesting that you don't like it. Not that it's wrong to have that opinion or anything, it's just the first I've heard that. Usually either people hate The Departed, or they consider them pretty equal.

I know. Geek boys with no clue about film love to be all over the "original." As if Departed has anything to do with Infernal, except for the most basic premise. Departed is way superior in every aspect. So much so, that it's really mood to even bother comparing each other.

The first Dragon Dynasty release that is disappointing.
First disc is the old Miramax one, no new extras, commentary only for part 2, and the 5 hour trilogy recut on the HK boxset was scrapped for this.

I still bought it anyway, as this version of the trilogy is the cheapest out there of the adequate ones.

Dragon Dynasty only own the distribution rights for the 2nd and 3rd films. Only through negotiations with Miramax was a box set possible.

I got this from my 'net movie rental account the other day - looking forward to it.

Wife: What is "Infernal Affairs"
Pender: I don't know. I remember it had something to do with DIMP.
Wife: Oh.
....
Wife: So, I probably don't want to watch it - do I?

After a quick DIMP search, I can see that she probably wouldn't like it - but I have a feeling I will be buying it after this (as well as the other two).

If you like the first film, you may as well buy the trilogy set. It's a great deal and three awesome flicks that compliment each other very well.

What? The Ol' Ball-and-Chain and I just watched this. While we both enjoyed it, we were surprised how closely The Departed followed it. I was hoping for a different riff on the same premise, but it was basically the same movie with different actors.

Still good, though, and we haven't watched the others yet. Since pretty much the whole plot of The Departed came from the first one, I'm sure there'll be more surprises there.

I still haven't seen The Departed.

Have even less enthusiasm for it now that I have seen this one.

Don't get me wrong, it is on the list - just not at the top and likely not to be on the top for a while.

The great Frank Gunn e-mailed me a brilliant rant after seeing INFERNAL AFFAIRS, about how, yeah, the plot points are basically the same, but how Scorsese's movie blows it away completely in terms of characterization, mood, style, and subtext.

In fact, he said that IA had all the visual style of something straight out of 1986; That instead of Leo's intense, wired, paranoid SERPICO-level performance, we get a jolly Chinese guy who never conveys any inner torment. There's none of the paternal issues relating to the "Nicholson" character-- again, it's just some bland fat Chinese guy.

I think it's fascinating to read how AICN fanboys and IA superfans in general equate matching PLOT POINTS with Scorsese somehow RIPPING OFF or COPYING their hidden treasure. As if mundane plot developments are the only thing there is to a movie. (It's also an incisive way to discern if an internet film geek is at all familiar with the process of adaptation or remaking, or if they've ever seen a foreign film that didn't feature Hong Kong action, but that's another story.)

None of what you're saying conflicts with my take on it. Yeah, the American actors played it differently. I'd agree with Frank that there was more characterization in the remake. But hell, I went into Internal Affairs expecting that The Departed had deviated a lot further in terms of plot. Other than the removal of the Morse code bit, pretty much every plot point was the same.

I'm pretty sure the Chinese version didn't have MARK WAHLBERG, so there's no fucking way it could be anywhere near as good.

I've been waffling on whether to see this or not. I'm interested, but no places around here have it for rent right now. Plus, I'm always put off by the cheap-looking "Asianiness" and the stilted, goofily translated dialogue of HK cinema.

You're basing your opinion on fucking Marky Mark? Dude's about as good an actor as he is a rapper.

The translations weren't as bad as I've seen for other movies. I thought, overall, it was good. Since none of my local places seem to be renting it, I bought the trilogy on reputation alone. One film in, we've got no complaints.

We actually wanted to see this pre-Departed, but it slipped by us. Actually the Ol' Ball-and-Chain was more interested than I was, which is probably why we didn't end up seeing it. It was still good, but go into it expecting very little structural change from the remake. That was my only real gripe.

Considering he was an AWESOME rapper, that's kind of a compliment. But really, the dozen or so MASTERPIECES he's been in the last decade and his great performances in each aren't enough to convince you otherwise? Really, the rapper angle of criticism is played out, and has been long since abandoned, really, by pretty much every legit film critic in the world. Even in something relatively straightforward like INVINCIBLE or ROCK STAR, he's beyond awesome in terms of charisma and star power.

Seriously, anyone who doesn't like Mark Wahlberg or still takes lame-ass, 1991-era potshots about his rapping career, doesn't know fuck all about film.

I would have though the Wahlberg bashing would have died off after his richly desvered Oscar nom. The only movie he sucked in was Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes, which can easily be chalked up to his embarrassment at being in a Tim Burton movie.

So you are like papi for Scorsese cinema?

Great job, Scorsese-papi.

I don't know, Pender.

How does not having seen any movie, listened to any album, or having any familiarity with any pop culture signifier post-1989 work out for your old ass?

Keep the hits coming. And grow some fucking hair, Mr. Hooper.
