C'mon. Fess up. I heard it twice during a meeting and I don't even work in an office. |

I would love to admit exactly as much, but instead the following conversation occured at lunch:
Andrea: blah blah blah Phil saw his shadow blah blah
Kim: Wasn't that Bill Murray movie on last night or the weekend?
Me: Last night.
Kim: I remember renting it a couple years ago and my son hated it.
Me: How come? I like it.
Kim: He said he didn't "get it" and kept asking why they kept repeating the same day.
Me: That's the story.
Kim: I know.

The Marq workplace sounds like hell on earth to any self-respecting film expert. Though the woman who wasn't aware that HOTEL RWANDA was about a well-known massacre (and thought it was a charming picaresque) still takes the cake.
Anyway, anyone who namedrops the movie GROUNDHOG DAY today is about on par with the chipper office types who proudly declare "See you next year!!!" on December 31st. |

I swear that there is a Twilight Zonish-portal door that exists between Marq's office and mine and that we actually work with the same people as a result.
No one mentioned Groundhog's Day though so I lucked out.
I did get called by "Tiffani" today. The 40 something black woman that works with me and as long as she remains silent about film, we're cool.
Tiff: Have you seen "Hero"?
Noto: Yes, I own Hero.
Tiff: You know how its subtitled?
Noto: Yes.
Tiff: It makes no sense!
Noto: [pause]...wait. What makes no sense? The fact that it is subtitled or the movie?
Tiff: The movie. They keep killing the same people over and over.
Noto: [pause]...I need to go pull some files. I'll be back in twenty. _________________ These movies just seem too 'Noto' for me.

 The Fucker With A Plan

Lex, I am ashamed to say I think I did use the "next year" line around Christmas this year.
I didn't know it was Groundhogs Day, so there was no mention of any of the like to anyone.
However I did tell one guy he couldn't be anymore of a mongloid if he tried, does that count for anything? |

Isn't Jane just the worst at hiding the fact that she takes swigs of rye whenever she goes to the washroom? Her Johnny Depp obsession is only mildly creepier. _________________ "The best way to destroy a taste for what is bad, is to cultivate a taste for what is good."

When did you follow her into the bathroom? What else did you see? C'mon spill it man! _________________ These movies just seem too 'Noto' for me.

Every couple days really. She's too drunk to notice me. What else did I see? One time I followed her and she was drinking a large wine glass filled with semen while 8 male co-workers watched on, their limp penises exposed and looking kinda sad. _________________ "The best way to destroy a taste for what is bad, is to cultivate a taste for what is good."

They did, but it was only open to kids in selected universities. I was one of them at the time, so I was on it. But hardly anyone else was.
Also at the time you could post your lecture/tutorial schedule, click on the link of a class and see who else was in it. That was boss. That's also how I found out that one guy in two of my classes was twins, and the other twin didn't know me from Adam which is why he was aloof on Thursday and personable on Tuesday. |

This is not less than awesome, and may even surpass awesome. I want this story to be true SO BAD that you must never, ever reveal it if you've embellished a bit to make for a better story. _________________ Blog - Alfred Hitchcock - Music - Podcast - Comics - Twitter |

I remember that. It became a big security thing because people could know where you lived and when you were going to be gone. It made it pretty easy to scope out people etc. I'm glad they changed it. some of those features have been taken up by blackboard, at least in terms of listing who the people are in a class with you. |

Totally true. Nice twin and I were a very small upper year seminar whereas his brother and I were in a 30 person class on the Canadian constitution.
There's a gemini appendix to this anecdote. Same year, same class on the constitution, there was a girl who bore an astounding likeness to another girl in my international relations theory tutorial. I saw them chatting together for the first time towards the end of the year and thought I was being cute when I said "Do you guys ever try to pass yourselves off as twins? Hardy har har."
They were twins. Fraternal though. The first two guys were identical.
2005 was a confusing year and the first time I realized how thick I am. Zero twindar, zero gaydar, and a serious inability to sense when I've overstayed my welcome. I'll often err on the side of caution and understay it to the point of offensiveness. |

Yeah, if I lived on campus I wouldn't have used that function. I'm not encouraging anyone to prove me wrong, but not even a full listing of my schedule, home and work addresses and blackberry PIN would facilitate a stalking. Routine makes me angry so I change it up a lot.
There was a guy who shadowed me in first year for a few months, but he fell off the radar when he got admitted to the psych ward. I doubt those two things are related. |
