AC/DC - A Classic Album Under Review: Back In Black
by Cary Christopher

Here’s the question. At what point do you find yourself liking an album so much that you want to spend two hours of your life watching a documentary of people talking about that album?

More specifically, at what point do you find yourself liking an album so much that you want to spend two hours of your life watching a documentary of people talking about that album, only one of which was even remotely connected with its production?

Ask yourself this question before picking up AC/DC A Classic Album Under Review: Back in Black. After you’ve asked yourself that question, if you still decide to pick it up, stop yourself and ask the question again.

After you’ve done that three times, if the answer is still yes, then you deserve your fate.

Blue Collar Comedy Tour - One For The Road
by Cary Christopher

Here’s the deal. I’m southern and I’m very proud of where I came from. I don’t have a rebel flag anywhere in my house. I don’t listen to Lynyrd Skynyrd religiously (although I do own all the albums… they’re good… you should own them too). I don’t have anyone in my family tree who ever owned a slave.

I’m telling you all of this so you’ll understand why I fucking HATE Jeff Foxworthy and more than that, I would like to kick Larry The Cable Guy in the nuts repeatedly… for days… with only short breaks to sleep and regain my strength so that I may resume the kicking.

Bram Stoker’s Dracula - Collectors Edition
by Cary Christopher

Why is it that I cannot stay awake to the end of this movie?

Seriously, that’s a question I’ve asked myself all seven times I’ve seen this film.  That’s right, I even dozed off during the theatrical run in 1992.  It happened right about the point that Hopkins and company board the train to Transylvania.  My brother shook me awake to tell me the credits were rolling.

The Bugaloos - The Complete Series
by Cary Christopher

The brain is a marvelous, wonderful thing. Essentially, it works as a super-efficient filter. It takes in stimuli from thousands of sources every second, sorts them, puts the important ones where you can deal with them and somehow manages to deal with the rest behind the scenes in such a way that they don’t overwhelm you. If it didn’t do that, we would all be curled up in fetal positions, gibbering like idiots with drool puddled around our heads.

The Call of Cthulhu: The Celebrated Story by H.P. Lovecraft
by Cary Christopher

“In his house at R’lyeh dead Cthulhu waits dreaming.”

If you know where that line comes from and what it means, you should be very, very excited about this film.

For those of you who don’t know, The Call of Cthulhu is a masterful story of cosmic horror originally written by H.P. Lovecraft in August/September of 1926.  Lovecraft wrote a ton of short stories, many of which made their way into the pulp magazine Weird Tales.  It was that magazine that finally published the story in their February 1928 edition, and its influence on the horror genre cannot be denied.

For a DVD review site, posters on the DIMP forums have spent an inordinate amount of time discussing the use of the word “nigger”.  It’s come up in various threads for various reasons.  If you go looking, you should probably start in the political forum (Bamboo Gods and Iron Men) or the free-for-all that is Take A Hard Ride

Charro
by Cary Christopher

Much has been said about Elvis Presley’s film career and how notoriously spotty it is.

Much of that has to do with Presley’s manager Colonel Tom Parker who famously steered Elvis away from serious roles and wanted to continue to present the rock and roll icon in screwball comedies and light-hearted fare.

College Football’s Greatest Games: Notre Dame Fighting Irish Collector's Edition
by Cary Christopher

Ahhh… college football. How I love it. Having gone to a major university in the heart of football country, I truly have a warm place in my heart for college football. Hearing ESPN’s Game Day theme at the end of August brings a tear to my eye and makes me all warm inside. Every fall brings renewed hope that this could be the year my team makes it to the National Championship.

Then, usually around mid-October, I resign myself to the fact that they ’ll be lucky to make it to a bowl game.

Danger Mouse – The Final Seasons
by Cary Christopher

The following conversation actually took place.  I was at work.  I called home to see how my wife, Karen, was doing.

Karen:  Hey, you got a package today from DIMP.  Do you want me to open it and see what it is?

Cary:  Sure.

Karen:  It’s Danger Mouse – The Final Seasons.

Cary:  Fuck.

You see, Danger Mouse was something I completely missed.  I remember sometime back in high school a friend tried to show me a couple of episodes on video tape but I just wasn’t into it.  It was 1986 and I was much more concerned with getting laid.

The Dick Cavett Show: Hollywood Greats
by Cary Christopher

Dick Cavett’s interview style is something of a divisive subject among those who discuss, or are mildly interested, in these sorts of things. Basically, it comes down to two camps: The first believes that he is a genius because, by letting his subjects talk, he ultimately gets them to reveal more of themselves in a more natural and interesting way than most interviewers. The second believes he’s horrible because he doesn’t rein in his interview subjects and lets them ramble on and on with mixed results.

Demetri Martin - Person
by Cary Christopher

Demetri Martin is a very funny guy. The thing about him is, he's not funny in that annoying Jerry Seinfeld 'Ever-wonder-what-happens-to-the-other-sock?' way.  He's also not funny in the Ron White 'I'm-sarcastic-and-much-cooler-than-you are' way either.  He doesn't use his insecurities as comedic fodder and he also doesn't work blue.  Occasionally he'll let an F-bomb fly but his restraint makes the use of it all the more humorous.

Donnie Brasco - Extended Cut
by Cary Christopher

Johnny Depp is my favorite actor, hands down. This is not something that happened right away. I didn’t switch on 21 Jump Street and marvel at his range. No, I had pretty much taken in Johnny Depp movies like popcorn and just thought of him the way most folks think of Matt Damon. He was good but not brilliant.

Double Indemnity (Special Edition)
by Cary Christopher

What can I possibly write about Double Indemnity that hasn’t been written already? For the two of you who read this and haven’t seen the film, it is far and away the best example of film noir ever shot, and arguably one of the greatest films ever made. Double Indemnity combined a taut, dark story with outstanding acting and direction in a truly original way.

Drawn Together - Season Two Uncensored
by Cary Christopher

Unlike many of the folks who post in our forums, I'm not a fan of reality shows. I've never gotten into them except for a few very notable exceptions. In fact, I've only ever followed three: Joe Millionaire, Joe Millionaire 2 and Rock of Love with Bret Michaels.

In looking at those choices closely, the latest trend data on my viewing habits would indicate that I love to watch shows about gold digging bitches and clueless fuckheads. I'm not going to deny it. When it comes to reality shows, if it's not funny I don't care to watch it.

Drive In Double: Assassination in Rome / Espionage in Tangiers
by Cary Christopher

Ah… the Drive-In Double Feature.  We’ve gone over this territory many times before here at DIMP, so I won’t go back into my love of that particular American institution. However, I will say that the last time we talked about it, I was not having a particularly good time watching the DVD I was reviewing.  Dark Sky Films has released multiple DVDs now that feature the "Drive-In Double Feature" format, meaning that the DVD starts up with some vintage ads for the concession stand and some previews of coming attractions and then the first movie starts.  Then there's an intermission and the second feature starts.  It is exactly what you would expect to see if you were actually sitting in your car at the drive-in sometime between 1955 and 1975. .

The Faculty
by Cary Christopher

The following is a true story and I can name witnesses.  The year was 1985.  I was starting my senior year of high school in a town I’d lived in just under eight months.  I had two friends and they had both graduated the year before.  In short, I was lost.

Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas - Criterion Collection
by Cary Christopher

I know when most of you think “summer/vacation movie” you think of family classics like National Lampoon’s Vacation or Meatballs. I’m happy for you. You make up the foundation of our society. Feel free to enjoy living your lives safely and securely in your house/apartment, curling up with your cat and/or small pet rodent, while remembering your lost innocence.

Me, I’m the jaded, cynical type. I went to camp once a long time ago. I’ve seen things since that would make my former counselors cringe. That’s why there’s only one summer vacation movie for me: Terry Gilliam’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

Frankenstein - The Legacy Collection
by Shawn McLoughlin & Cary Christopher
October 24, 2006

Based on the book by Mary Shelley and the play adaptation by Peggy Webling, James Whale's film tells the story of Henry Frankenstein, a scientist obsessed with finding the key to creating life. He assembles a body from parts of corpses and reanimates it using electricity. Repulsed by his creation, he rejects the monster. It roams the countryside, creating a wave of terror. Released the same year as Tod Browning's Dracula, Frankenstein made Boris Karloff a star and became the launching pad for a number of sequels.

Frankenstein Meets The Space Monster
by Cary Christopher

If there is anything in this world which I mourn the death of more than that of the drive-in movie, I'm hard pressed to think of what it is.  Yes, I know that dates me pretty well, but seriously, straight to DVD productions just don't have the same cheap flair that some of the worst of the drive-in movies had.  As late as the early 1980's, the town I grew up in still had a two screen drive-in theater that committed one screen to showing 1940's and 1950's cheapo horror flicks on Saturday nights.
