Cary: Okay.
Was it just me, or did the commentary on this one bore the
absolute shit out of you also?
Shawn: Paul Jensen
must be a penname for Ben Stein. He couldn't have been droller.
Not even if he was hopped up on sedatives, which he may have
been. I thought the content was great, but the delivery was
just fucking horrible.
Cary: See, I
disagree with that. I thought he mostly narrated the film
instead of giving us any real insight (beyond the magician
script thing). Compared to commentaries on some of the other
films, his was easily the weakest.
Shawn: He does do that quite a bit, but I felt that there
were good facts to be had. I do agree that it was the weakest
commentary thus far, though. What I did like was that it included
all the talk about scenes that were apparently shot but lost.
A lot of them I think could have improved on the version released.
Overall, though, I would recommend to readers that they stick
with the documentary.
Cary: That's
true. He did go into more detail on those than the other commentaries.
I thought the documentary was okay. It puts the film in context
with the time and the fascination with Egypt. Again, though,
not a lot here beyond that.
Shawn: Well, there
wasn't a lot for them to talk about with the sequels.
Cary: Even the
documentary makers get a little flippant with their descriptions
of the sequels (especially the handling of the Mummy's return
in each).
Shawn: It, too, is
the weakest of the documentaries, compared to the Dracula and Frankenstein sets.
Cary: The one
thing I keep getting reminded of with all the trailers on
these sets is how much of the plot they gave away on every
trailer. There was really no teasing at all. Some show the
mummy outright killing main characters.
Shawn: I can't believe
people really went to see these. It's no
wonder that there was never a House Of Mummy type film, and that the Hammer films are a drastic improvement.
Cary: Yes. Now, see, there is an actor who put a positive
stamp on the Kharis character. I know we're not really talking
Hammer here, but Christopher Lee always made for a good mummy.
Shawn: There's a project
for next Halloween – maybe.
Cary: Overall
I give this 3.5 pants. 4.0 pants for being a completists dream,
but -0.5 pants for being a set I won't watch every year when
I start pulling these out for Halloween. This is easily the
one set I could skip and not ever care about.
Shawn: I have no problem
sharing that score. I can't see myself watching anything other
than the Karloff film anytime soon. And by anytime soon, I
mean the next decade.
