Doctor Who Week
by Chris Hughes
November 13 , 2006
Here at ,
we love groovy British TV shows made in the 1960s. From The
Thunderbirds to Secret Agent to The
Avengers to The
Prisoner, we just can’t get enough, and
when it comes to quirky UK psychedelia, no show is quirkier
or more mind-bending than Doctor Who. The long
running series, ostensibly intended for children but enjoyed
by people of all ages,
features an ever changing cast of supporting characters flinging
themselves through time and space inside a blue police phone
booth (the TARDIS) piloted by a grandfatherly philosopher/scientist
known only as the Doctor. As a “Time Lord,” the
Doctor is charged with setting wrong to right in the universe,
and in the process, faces off against a wide range of imaginative
foes, including sea monsters, abominable snow men, robots,
mutants, and the omnipresent Daleks – high tech trash
cans on wheels.

Doctor Who - The Beginning
by John Felix
November 13 , 2006
As stated specifically in the review itself, this is the first time I have managed to watch any sort of Doctor Who in any incarnation. Because of this, I will probably get a few things wrong, due to ignorance of the subject itself, or because things were changed in the continuity of a twenty-five-plus year television show. I know how rabid a fan base can be, so please, cut me some slack on the material. I don’t want to open up my email, or a feedback thread and read about how horribly misinformed I am on the subject of Doctor Who. I’m well aware of that fact.

Doctor Who - The Web Planet
by Chris Hughes
November 14 , 2006
One of the earliest existing complete
Doctor Who adventures, The Web Planet is a masterpiece of surreal
design that fans have been eagerly awaiting on DVD. In many ways, this
adventure set the stage for much of what would come later in the series.
It features exceedingly imaginative set designs, bizarre costumes, memorable
performances, and a plot that focuses more on the aliens than on the
Doctor and his companions. The Web Planet’s slow and deliberate
pace draws viewers in and envelops them in an interior logic and atmosphere
that reminds me of the feel of George Romero’s Night of the Living
Dead. But most of all, it’s a psychedelic artifact of switched-on
‘60s’ culture that works as both a crazy lark and a relatively serious
science fantasy story.

Doctor Who -
The Inferno
by Chris Knight
November 15 , 2006
I must admit, I’m
not a big fan of Jon Pertwee’s portrayal of Doctor Who (he is the
third one, in case you aren’t familiar enough with the show).
He is way too flamboyant for such a great character. Gay, if you will.
I think the cape gives it away. Personally, I feel Pertwee was better
at playing Worzel Gummidge, a popular British children’s TV show character
from the 70s – and I have a hard time seeing him as anything different.

Doctor Who - Genesis Of The Daleks
by Shawn McLoughlin
November 16 , 2006
Genesis Of The Daleks is a
goddamned perfect Doctor Who story.
Now, I’ve always been a fairly big fan of
Doctor Who and I, like most American fans, consider Tom Baker (the Fourth
Doctor) my favorite Doctor. There may be some unfair bias here and I recognize
this, not just because Tom Baker played the Doctor for a longer time than any
other actor, but also because they were the stories consistently reran on PBS
throughout the 1980s, despite the fact that he left the role in 1981.

Doctor Who - Revelation Of The Daleks
by Shawn McLoughlin
November 17 , 2006
Genesis Of The
Daleks is a goddamned perfect Doctor Who story.
Revelation Of The Daleks is not.
For one, it has like, the most non-threatening incarnation of Davros ever.
For two, it's an exceptionally bleak and dark story but isn't ever scary. For
thirds, it’s a Sixth Doctor story starring Colin Baker.
Sorry. That last bit was just harsh.
