Inside
The Mind Of Dante Tomaselli
by Eric San Juan
November
3, 2005
When attended the Fangoria Weekend
of Horrors in September, we knew we'd be seeing some great
names of the genre. What we didn't expect was to discover
a compelling new (to us) director right in our backyard. Dante
Tomaselli, director of two low-budget horror films, Desecration and Horror, showed off footage from his soon-to-be-released
by Anchor Bay film Satan's
Playground -- and we were instant fans.

Clive
Barker Raises Hell
by Eric San Juan
November
3, 2005
He's been a popular and successful author, penning
short stories and novels that have sold hundreds of thousands
of copies and spawned a thriving and loyal fan base.
He's been a movie director, bringing his horrific,
entirely unique creations to the screen and gathering a cult
following of devoted fans in the process.
He's even been a driving force behind a successful
(and frightening) video game.
He is Clive Barker, and by any measure he is
one of the great modern masters of horror, a name arguably
second only to Stephen King in the world of multimedia terror.

The
10 Best Horror Sequels on DVD
by Shawn McLoughlin
October
31, 2005
Sequels are traditionally garbage. For every Terminator 2: Judgment Day there is an Eddie
and the Cruisers II: Eddie Lives (that sounds like
a horror film, but it isn’t). But there is an exception
to this – horror films. It isn’t that horror film
sequels are golden, filled with fantastic writing or acting;
on the contrary, the difference between the horror sequel
and the average non-horror sequel is that the horror film
rarely tries to exceed its own reach. You are likely to be
more satisfied with the limitations of Creepshow 2 than you are Caddyshack II. So to achieve
the ultimate in karma points, I’ve decided to tell you
straight up what the ten most worthy horror sequels are for
your Halloween amusement. This way, you won’t have to
sit through the duds (unless they are Milk Duds). All of these
are available on DVD, so you have no damned excuse not to
rent if you missed one. Enjoy!

Out
On A Limb: Hyping Saw II
by Eric San Juan
October
27, 2005
It was going to be a small little horror/slasher
flick. Grim, heavily influenced by things like David Fincher's Seven, stylish.
But it wasn't supposed to be huge.
For writer/director James Wan and writer/actor
Leigh Whannell, the big success of Saw, sparked by nonstop
word-of-mouth and an ingenious marketing campaign, has opened
up doors. Doors to new films and new opportunities. Doors
to more recognition and more money. And doors to sequels.

You Say “BOO”?
A Guide To Kid-Friendly Horror
by Comedian
October
27, 2005
As a child I enjoyed a good scary movie during
Halloween, something that continued into adulthood. Every
year, I buy a few new horror movies when the Halloween season
kicks in, getting my share of scares. It’s not difficult
to do; the DVD shelves are littered with scores of horror
titles. But while there are plenty of horror and monster movies
out there for adults, finding something the kids and adults
can watch together can be difficult.
Difficult, but not impossible. Here are some
suggestions for your kids and for the kid at heart...

Fan's Journey Into Horror:
Part 2 of 2: Growing Up
Horror
by Trevor Griffiths
October
25, 2005
At a horror convention, surrounded by so many
faces familiar from the films you love, the quest for autographs
begins the moment you walk in the door.
We spent a significant amount of time on Friday
getting autographs from the guests in attendance. Gunnar Hansen
(Leatherface from the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre) and
Tony Todd (Candyman)were the first to hit the autograph area.
We were pretty much the only people there when they arrived,
so we had a chance to chat with both actors for a few minutes.
Hansen outlined several projects he has in the works, including
a film to star him, Kane Hodder and Robert England as a trio
of serial killers.

The
Most Horrible, Frightening, Terrible, Vile, Awful Moments
in Non-Horror Movie History!
by John Felix
October 25, 2005
This is a collection of films that don’t
belong in a horror movie list. In fact, most of these films
have nothing to do with horror whatsoever. Sure, some of them
intentionally create uncomfortable situations, but for the
most part they shouldn’t even be anywhere near the word
“horror”. However, every single movie on this
list has moments, even fleeting, where they’ve managed
to give me the absolute goddamn heebie-jeebies.
So let’s celebrate those uncomfortable,
stomach-churning moments. These aren’t ranked in any
particular order, but if you have a fastidious need for organization,
pretend this is a list that ranks things from “unpleasant”
to “unpleasant,” or vice-versa.

Look Inside:
Satan's Playground
by Eric San Juan
October
6, 2005
There is a horror lurking in the vast expanse
of the New Jersey Pine Barrens, a terrible creature of legend.
Bloodthirsty. A demonic presence, born of a 19th Century mother
tired of having children, frustrated at her ever-growing brood.
She cursed the child, wished for a devil. And got her wish.
That child is the Jersey Devil, the unseen fear
behind Dante Tomaselli’s latest horror film, Satan’s
Playground.

Fan's Journey Into Horror:
Part 1 of 2: Growing Up
Horror
by Trevor Griffiths
October
6, 2005
The outsider and the freak have always been mainstays
of the horror genre. While the general audience for horror
waxes and wanes according to the tide of popular culture,
there remains a devout, loyal and hardcore following regardless
of the genre’s current rating on the “Hot Or Not”
chart. These are the people who get more than just a visceral
thrill or chill from watching a horror film. These are the
people who empathize with the characters, be they man, monster
or something else. These same people spend hours dissecting
everything in a horror film, from the composition of the shots
to the quality of the makeup to creativeness of the kills
to, yes, even the acting.
