 Goes To War!
by Eric San Juan
June 26 , 2006
War
is hell. That is, except when presented on the silver screen,
where war can be almost anything – dramatic, moving,
artistic, harrowing, entertaining, enlightening, and just
about any other “ing” you can think of. Perhaps
no other genre in film has a longer, richer and more varied
history than the war film. From the earliest days of cinema
and at every stage of its development, the war film has been
a mainstay, always popular, and often pushing the envelope
of greatness.
With
the skies over North America set to light up next week with
colorful and bombastic explosions, we here at thought there could be no better time to pull our camo from
the closet and charge into battle.

Band Of Brothers
by Eric San Juan
June 26, 2006
While
critical reaction to Steven Spielberg’s World War II
epic Saving Private Ryan was mixed
(the opening assault at Omaha Beach was a tour de force of
technical prowess, but the rest of the film lacked life) the
movie was a box-office success. Embraced by the public as
one of the most harrowing glimpses into World War II ever
brought to the big screen, Spielberg and lead actor Tom Hanks
decided they had more WWII stories to tell.
Enter Band of Brothers.

Platoon: Two-Disc 20th Anniversary Edition
by Shawm McLoughlin
June 27, 2006
War means a lot of things to a lot of
people. To some it means unnecessary death. To others it is
the ultimate in patriotism. Most fall somewhere in the middle,
with viewpoints that angle in one direction or another. Traditionally,
war films during the studio era were, right through the 1970s,
tilted much more towards overt patriotism. This was no surprise,
really, since America had never lost a major war to that point.
Coming off of an amazing victory in World War II over quite
possibly the most easily demonized villains in written history,
America was seemingly invincible. We were an unstoppable force.
Nothing could stand in our way.

Patton
by Larry Phillips
June 28, 2006
“Now I want you to remember that no
bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it
by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country.”
Patton. All you need to hear is one name, the
last name of one of America’s greatest generals. His
is a name that conjures up images of some of the greatest
military commanders in the history of warfare. Patton. General
George S. Patton, a man whose entire life led up to the very
thing he felt he was put on the Earth to do: lead American
soldiers in battle.

Papercut Cinema: # 5
by Lostwire
July 28, 2006
"These are great days we're living, bros. We are jolly green giants, walking the Earth with guns. These people we wasted here today are the finest human beings we will ever know. After we rotate back to the world, we're gonna miss not having anyone around that's worth shooting."
"Are there no gods... no Buddha? If you exist, hear me. You are mischievous and cruel! Are you so bored up there you must crush us like ants? Is it such fun to see men weep?"
"You want to explain the math of this to me? I mean, where's the sense in risking the lives of the eight of us to save one guy?"

Voices
In Wartime
by Chris Hughes
I'll admit it. To paraphrase Pete Townshend,
I've known no war. In that respect I'm like most Americans
my age. I grew up in a time of peace, when wars were distant
events that had no direct impact on my life. But more than
that - even now, when this nation is involved in a continuing
conflict in Iraq, I still know no war. That's because I, like
every civilian, can never fully comprehend the experience
of wartime. How can anyone who has never been trained to kill,
has never faced the institutionalized struggle for life and
death, ever really understand it?

"What You Should Watch On July 4th” Spectacular!
by Eric San Juan
November 13 , 2006
Admit it. You're not going to a barbeque
on the Fourth of July. You're not going to a party. You're
not going to spend time with friends. You're not even going
to be in the presence of other humans watching fireworks. You're
going to sit alone in your room, surfing the Internet and bitterly
cursing all those obnoxious people out there having fun like
the bunch of losers that they are.
Okay, fine. Yes, I'm talking about me.
