Crushes Evil: Welcome To Superhero Week!
by Eric San Juan
April 30, 2007

The superhero. Bright. Colorful. Powerful. And most of all, noble.

More than any other creation of the 20th Century, the superhero puts the myths and legends of ancient days in a modern context, showing us sights that would do the storytellers of ancient Greece proud; gods clashing in the skies to the wonder and awe of mere mortals. Men and women who fight, and die, in an endless struggle against evil; beings more powerful than we can fathom deciding our fate in the alleyways and galaxies of the imagination. The superhero speaks to something inside us; an eternal void begging to be filled; an intangible need for things larger than ourselves. Their titanic adventures and mythic tales are a modern reflection of the ancient morality plays so important to human civilization. More than anything else, this is what draws us to the superhero.

Batman - The Complete 1943 Movie Serial Collection
by Bob Garrett
April 30, 2007

Quick: Who was the first screen Batman? If you answered, “Adam West,” then go to the back of the line. Lewis Wilson became the first to don the famed cowl in 1943. He starred in Batman, a fifteen-part serial largely forgotten today. Thanks to the marvels of modern technology, though, you can now own the complete saga on DVD.

Blade
by Gerry Donaghy
May 1, 2007

After Joel Schumacher’s dreadful couplet of Batman Forever and Batman & Robin, it was reasonable to expect that any superhero-themed film was going to be box office poison. Both films were critically lambasted and exemplified the law of diminishing returns with regard to the studio‘s coffers. However, less then a year following the Caped Crusader’s inglorious retreat from the screen, a new superhero film was released. Most moviegoers flocking to see it didn’t know they were going to see a film based on a comic book character, albeit a minor one. In fact, so potent was the Batman-backlash that one suspects that the studio went out of its way to avoid mentioning this hero’s comic book origins.

Spider Writers: Ranking Their Best Runs
by Bob Garrett
May 2, 2007

Football fans have their Super Bowl. Comics fans have super hero movie premieres. Spider-Man 3represents more than two hours in a theatre – and fans are likely to eat it up. These days, if Spidey’s a favorite character, then you can proudly wave your fan banner and celebrate his history.

In that spirit, I present this retrospective spotlighting the best writers’ runs on Spider-Man comics.  By doing this, I don’t mean to downplay artists’ contributions. I originally tried grouping runs by artist and writer, but it proved difficult, as a writer often outlasted several artists or vice versa.  I’ll leave it for someone else to evaluate the artists’ run.

Papercut Cinema: # 6
by Lostwire
May 2, 2007

"We need a hero, couragous sacrificing people, setting examples for all of us. Everybody loves a hero, people line up for 'em, cheer for them, scream their names, and years later tell how they stood in the rain for hours just to get a glimpse of the one who told them to HOLD ON a second longer. "

"Gotham's time has come. Like Constantinople or Rome before it the city has become a breeding ground for suffering and injustice. It is beyond saving and must be allowed to die. This is the most important function of the League of Shadows. It is one we've performed for centuries. Gotham... must be destroyed."

"And what have I done to my son, Ms. Ross? Nothing, I tried to improve on the limits in myself, myself, not him. Can you understand, to improve on nature, my nature, knowledge of one's self. It's the only path to the truth that give men the power to go beyond god's boundaries."

Cutie Honey – Limited Edition
by Shawn McLoughlin
May 2, 2007

Imagine the most sugar-packed breakfast cereal you can think of. My personal favorite is Cap’n Crunch’s Peanut Butter Crunch, although I am sure there are worse morning energy sources. Now imagine a huge salad bowl full of this cereal. Instead of your standard moo-juice, a melted vanilla milkshake is poured on top to properly lubricate the crunchy goodness. You’re probably sweating just thinking about the overload you’d receive by eating this -- yet this breakfast of champions alone cannot provide the energy needed for the average person to get through the entire live-action Cutie Honey movie. One important, critical ingredient is missing.

Top Ten Superhero Flicks!
by Eric San Juan
May 4, 2007

Superhero movies are notoriously difficult to do well. The action is larger than life, the characters traditionally dressed in outlandishly colorful garb, and translating the dynamic nature of superhero comics to film has presented huge financial and technological hurdles. But the tide is turning. Technology has finally started to catch up with the wild imaginations of Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, and all those kids from the 1960s, ‘70s and ‘80s who grew up reading and loving comics are now writers, directors, actors, and studio executives. For maybe the first time, we can routinely see the biggest sights and sounds comics have to offer come to life.
