Demetri Martin is a very funny guy.
The thing about him is, he's not funny in that annoying Jerry Seinfeld 'Ever-wonder-what-happens-to-the-other-sock?' way. He's also not funny in the Ron White 'I'm-sarcastic-and-much-cooler-than-you are' way either. He doesn't use his insecurities as comedic fodder and he also doesn't work blue. Occasionally he'll let an F-bomb fly but his restraint makes the use of it all the more humorous.
Demetri Martin is funny like a writer for The Simpsons is funny. He's smart funny. He doesn't treat his audience as if they need to play catch up. He's quirky but not to the point of distraction. In many ways, his comedy straddles a line between adult themes and childlike observances. It's an interesting mix and something that very few comics do well.
However, in my opinion Demetri Martin is in the cream of the crop of comics on the rise in the United States.
Demetri Martin - Person is pretty much everything you could ever want from the comic in one DVD release. Comprised mainly of his stand up appearance in Austin, Texas, the DVD includes a number of other performance clips, his original Comedy Central Presents set, commentary on the main set, deleted bits, jokes that never made it, etc. It's like a box set only it's one disc... because Demetri hasn't been around long enough to produce a box set worth of material.
The bottom line is this. Watching this DVD made me laugh. It made me laugh repeatedly. It made me laugh more than the William Shatner Roast did. It made me laugh harder than the Zach Galifanakis DVD did (which is interesting because I love Zach and there's a bit that Martin does on the piano that's eerily close to mimicking Galifanakis).
It did not make me laugh harder than the last three Patton Oswalt releases but it's seriously hard to make someone laugh harder than those. I mean, that guy is just at the very top of his game right now.
The best thing I can say about Demetri Martin is that his comedy is fresh. He doesn't just stand up in front of an audience and tell jokes.
He uses props, stages elaborate readings and plays. He'll bring out his mother and grandmother and joke at their expense. The guy does his best to mix it up and 99.9% of the time, it works.
So, if you want to spend 45 minutes smiling from ear to ear and laughing out loud, probably the cheapest way to do so is to buy or rent this DVD. It's just that simple.
Presentation
It's a Comedy Central DVD. It looks fine and the sound is fine. There's really nothing here that's going to challenge your home theater system and if you're looking to this release to fill your tech/geek needs... well then that's seriously funny.
Extras
There's a veritable crapload of extras on this disc. First up you have a feature length commentary on the show with Demetri, his two uncles, his mother and his grandmother. His sister may be in there also. Hell, the whole family shows up at some point. It's fun to listen to and especially so as his mother and grandmother begin going back and forth about why they weren't at the show.
Also included is the original Comedy Central Presents set that turned me onto Demetri Martin. It's still hilarious and contains completely different material from Austin set. There are deleted scenes, both with and without commentary. There is more stand-up footage included from sets at Caroline's, Luna Lounge and North Star. There is a short film entitled Creep Eating an Ice Cream Pop. There is a spoof on the set called Behind the Joke. There is a feature on rejected set ideas for the show.
See what I mean? It's got everything but the kitchen sink in here and most of it is hilariously funny.
The Bottom Line
This is a very funny DVD and you'd do yourself a favor to learn Demetri Martin's name and check this release out.
