The Gathering
by Cary Christopher

I’m going to piss off a lot of people in the first three paragraphs of this review, but I just have to say this:  I love the Catholic Church.  You see, I grew up in “protestant fundamental Christianity-land” complete with the speaking in tongues, hands on healing, etc. Every myth or story in that church was about the temptations of The Devil.  For crying out loud, my church believed you could actually be possessed by a demon by just watching the movie The Exorcist!  It was all a one note song with no real room for your imagination to run with anything.  All you needed to know was that demons and The Devil were real and you better get right with God. At the time, I remember thinking that was some seriously crazy shit to believe.

Ghost Rider
by Cary Christopher

WARNING:  Before you begin your tirades against this review, let this soak in.  There is absolutely no way I can be objective about a Ghost Rider movie.

I am a fan of a lot of things.  I am a "blathering fanboy" about only one.  That thing is Ghost Rider.  As a boy, I didn’t read Ghost Rider.  I read the occasional Marvel book, a DC Batman here and there and mostly my diet consisted of Creepy, Eerie, Vampirella and Famous Monsters of Filmland.  I stopped reading those and started looking for porn at about thirteen.

Guided By Voices: The Electrifying Conclusion
by Cary Christopher

If you could be a member of any rock band ever, who would you be?

If you’re a guy, it’s tempting to say something like Led Zeppelin or even Motley Crue.  The constant barrage of loose women alone would sway most of us.

I’d have a hard time narrowing it down myself, but if pressed I’d go with Robert Pollard of Guided By Voices.  Why?  Because he’s been doing pretty much whatever the fuck he’s wanted to do for the last twenty years and hasn’t had to work a day job since 1994.  Argue all you want, but I’d give up the excess pussy for the freedom to follow my muse wherever it takes me.

Half-Cocked/Radiation
by Cary Christopher

All of us have a film that we like despite its flaws. Admit it. Somewhere in your DVD library is a guilty pleasure; a film that only you truly appreciate. Some of us have more than others. For me, generally my guilty pleasures are horror films however recently I was asked to review the DVD release of Half-Cocked, an independent film shot with musicians instead of actors back in 1994 and Radiation, a companion film shot during the promotional tour for the original film. Both films are flawed in many ways but for me they did something that few films have done in the last twenty years. They made me walk away feeling different after having watched them.

Half-Cocked/Radiation
by Cary Christopher

When we were first offered Harsh Times for review, I requested it rather grudgingly.  I knew that I needed to request more titles in order to keep the content for the site coming but I’d heard a couple of bad things about Harsh Times and the speed with which it left theaters concerned me.  It’s written and directed by David Ayer, the man who wrote Training Day.  It’s set in South Central Los Angeles, not far from where Training Day was set.  It’s a story of a man who is trying to get on the LAPD after serving in the military but gets wrapped up in petty crime… which also bears some resemblance to Training Day.

Hellboy: Sword of Storms
by Cary Christopher

Five pants.  Seriously, that's all you need to read here.  I'm giving it a full five pants. You need to go out and buy this if you're a fan of the comic or a fan of animated action movies in general.

Want to know more about why I'm giving it five pants?  Want to know if you can trust my judgement?

The Hunt
by Cary Christopher

When I watched the final ten minutes of the movie The Hunt three words came to mind immediately: Fucking Hell Yes!

Allow me to explain.

The Hunt is an independent horror film that takes place in the Oklahoma woods. It's the story of two men and a boy who go out to shoot an instructional video on how to stalk and hunt deer with a compound bow. Arriving on the property they've leased for the day, the three set out and soon stumble on a fenced area they didn't expect to find. Ignoring the warning signs posted, they wriggle under the fence at a low point and start stumbling on some strange things. Before the next sunrise, only one will survive.

The Incredible Hulk - The Complete First Season
by Cary Christopher

Ahhh, to be ten again. Friday nights in my innocent youth were spent at my grandmother's house. My cousin Chris, my younger brother Patrick and I would spend almost every weekend there and spend all day Saturday fishing and riding around in a small aluminum boat being complete fools. Take away the fishing poles and the boat and some would argue that nothing has changed.

I digress.

Irish American Ninja
by Cary Christopher

Underground, independent cinema… there's just nothing else like it. I'm not talking about that fucking straight to video, ex-porn star, softcore detective movie shit. I'm talking about true, made it with my video camera in my backyard with some buddies, filmmaking! When it comes down to it, you either get complete crap (and boy have I seen my share of it) or undiscovered brilliance. Unfortunately, there are more turds out there than unpolished diamonds, but when you do find one, whoa boy is it fun to turn all your friends on to it.

Japón
by Cary Christopher

The trick to reviewing a movie is to find some kind of hook. You look for some thing to grab a reader’s attention and suck them in. Sometimes though, a writer can wrack his brain trying to find a hook and come up empty. That’s what’s happened with Japón. I’ve watched the movie, alternately enjoying it and cursing it. Then when it comes to sitting down to write about it, I just come up with nothing.

Is it the movie’s fault or my own? My guess is, it’s a little of both.
